It was released on the day of his 32nd birthday and three days before his death. On Metacritic, Donuts has received "universal acclaim" from critics, based on an aggregate score of 84/100 from 15 reviews.

Released only three days before his untimely death, Donuts was J Dilla’s ninth album and would go to be recognised as one of the most important albums of the 2000s.The album was recorded whilst Dilla was in hospital undergoing treatment for lupus on a Boss SP-303 sampler and a portable turntable which were brought to hospital by his friends from the Stones Throw record label.

J Dilla produced the track for Ghost before he died, but I guess he still wanted an instrumental version on his own album. Overall, Donuts is a hell of an album. It's fun, unpredictable and has an incredibly high replay value.
